Vinyl flooring is readily available as sheets or tiles. Vinyl flooring is likely the least expensive type of flooring and it is also quite popular with homeowners. Vinyl tiles are available in many colours and styles. They can be easily installed thanks to the self-adhesive backing that allows for easy peel and stick. Sheet vinyl is much harder to install and may require the assistance of a seasoned professional in order to ensure the perfect fit. Typically, before you select any type of vinyl for your floors, you should weigh the advantages and disadvantages.
Vinyl Flooring Advantages
It is no secret that vinyl floors offers a softer flooring surface option than other types of flooring. Vinyl flooring is typically backed with felt or foam. The soft layer allows the floor to be more flexible so that you can stand on it longer.
Vinyl tiles are available in many styles which even include a design that mimics the look of hardwood or stone flooring. In some cases, it can be very difficult to tell the difference between a vinyl product and a stone or wood vinyl.
Vinyl can be highly durable so that you don't have to worry about it wearing out. Vinyl flooring manufacturers stand behind their products and offer long-term warranties of up to 20 years. Vinyl flooring that has been well-maintained is likely to last for more than 25 years.
Vinyl flooring is also very resistant to water and dirt, which means that it can be installed directly over other types of flooring. This flooring will not even need to be removed first. Vinyl flooring can help with floors that have a lot of cracks.
When it comes to cleaning, virtually no maintenance is required. Just sweep or mop on occasion.
Disadvantages of Vinyl Flooring
The main disadvantage of vinyl flooring is that it is made by using PVC and emits volatile organic compounds. VOC inhalation is not recommended for people with respiratory issues. The good news is that manufacturers of vinyl flooring are trying to use less PVC.
Installation of vinyl flooring is simple. However, the pre-installation process to get the sub-floor ready can be tedious. The sub-floor must have all particles removed in order to ensure that the vinyl flooring looks even and neat.
Vinyl flooring can prevent glass breakage if an item is dropped. However, sharp objects may gouge the surface of the floor. You may also need to put down furniture pads on the bottom of the furniture legs in order to prevent the development of indentations or other damage.
